Shag rugs are one of the most distinctive additions you can make to a room. The long yarn that hangs off these rugs and the loose pile give these a striking apperance.
Shag rugs are manufactured in one of two ways: hand knotting and hand tufting. Hand knotting means the knots are tied with the fibers, and difficult and time intensive process. These are usually expensive, especially if they feature a decorative pattern.
A hand tufted rug is cheaper, but less durable than a hand knotted rug. But both are unique and add a ton of personality to a room.
We Clean Shag Rugs
At Fuzzy Wuzzy, our technicians follow a quality and detailed shag rug cleaning process. Each shag rug is pre-inspected to determine the material from which the yarn is made. We examine all the fibers and note down all stains that are present.
After the type of stains on your rug are determined, our certified technicians will take steps to remove them. This typically includes submerging your rug in mild cleaning solutions or rubbing the spot with a suitable agent. If the yarn of your shag rug contains cotton in certain percentages, we try not to get your rug wet.
We use alkaline-based cleaning products so that we can minimize the risks of color fading.
After your rug has undergone our shag rug cleaning, we may also subject it to additional treatments at your request. These include pet deodorizer and stain guard, both of which can extend the life of your shag rug.

How to Clean a Shag Rug
Our professionals recommend that you have your shag area rug cleaned every 12 to 18 months. Following that schedule will preserve the life of your shag rug, and require minimal cleaning yourself at home.
In between cleanings at Fuzzy Wuzzy, you can maintain the look of your shag rug by doing the following:
- Avoid walking on your shag rug with shoes. Shag rugs are best in low traffic areas and away from food and drinks.
- An upright vacuum is going to be incapable of properly cleaning your shag rug, and might even damage the rug. Use a handheld attachment if you must vacuum.
- Hang your shag rug outside and beat it. Beating your rug will loosen the dirt and debris.
- Clean all spots and stains immediately. You want to prevent the fluid from reaching the backing of the shag rug.
